Clutter Busting: Letting Go of What's Holding You Back
by: Brooks Palmer

Editorial Review:

Piles of junk in garages and closets, overflowing papers on desks, items unused for years, masses of unanswered email, clothing never worn, useless gifts that collect dust -- all these things, says Brooks Palmer, come weighted with shame and guilt and have a suffocating effect on spirit and soul. In this insightful book, Palmer shows how to get rid of the things in our lives that no longer serve us. By tossing out these unneeded items, we are also eliminating their negative influences, freeing up energy, and unlocking our potential.
Loaded with inspiring anecdotes and practical tips, Clutter Busting is based on the premise that your things are not sacred, but you are. The book explores such fundamental topics as the false identities we assume through clutter, the fear of change those junk piles represent, the addictive nature of holding on to objects, how clearing clutter makes room for clarity and sweeps away confusion and stasis, and much more. With Brooks's upbeat and compassionate guidance, you'll find yourself clearing the way for new and exciting things to come into your life.

Someone who has been there:

I've read a lot of organizational/clutter busting books in my time and if you could see my house you'd know why. But what I like about this one is that it is human, been there/done that kind of attitude. I've always hated organizational books where organized people try to tell slobs how to become organized. It just isn't possible. The most successful books are books written by people who know what they're talking about, who've lived it, experienced it and gotten through it. I would have given it 5 stars... more info

Inspired to get rid of even more stuff:

I prefer this type of book over other clutter-related books, many of which don't offer enough motivation to get rid of the clutter, but instead basically tell you how to package it up in pretty boxes so it's "out of the way." This book and Scaling Down by Judi Culbertson are probably the best I've read for really inspiring me to get rid of stuff that's holding me back or distracting me. My only issue with Clutter Busting is the style of writing. The flow just isn't there - too many short sentences, and... more info

Learning to let go:

The goal of this book is to reconnect people with the true purpose of things.
Here's a quote from the book:
-- "Things are functional. Their job is to make your life easier or to increase your level of fun. Things become clutter when they no longer achieve either of these results."
It doesn't matter if these things are worn out or brand new. If they're no longer useful to you, then they're taking up precious physical and psychological space.
Instead of adding to your life, clutter... more info

Getting to the bottom of "clutter":

Brooks Palmer gets to the bottom of the psychological issues about "clutter" that are lurking subconsciously within so many of us. People tend to start out in denial. His caring, but firm methods to clutter-bust help break through the stranglehold of clutter. Brooks, through his anecdotes of clients, shows how to triumph. It's not about buying systems or ways to organize all your stuff. It's about getting rid of it and freeing yourself emotionally. External clutter weighs us down with internal clutter.more info
