Effective & Quiet:
I bought a Sharp CV-P10RC from my local Costco store a month ago, just as a hot day was forecast. (We don't get too many in Seattle). The area to be cooled is my office in the loft, which is part of the whole house. The floor area of the ground floor is about 10 yards by 12 yards, with 2 stories of large windows facing south-west, so my office normally is the hottest place in the entire house. The unit is currently set up in a 2-car garage that is approximtely 500 square feet. 2 old poorly insulated garage doors + leaky ancient window that should have been replaced 5 yeas ago + a large air compressor + portable lights + massive heat wave in the DC/MD/VA area = plenty of heat and total misery when working on my hobbies. I bought this unit for additional cooling in our bedroom. We just cant seem to get the airflow to keep the room comfortable at night. I guess 2 adults and 3 dogs in a 12 x 12 room generate quite a bit of heat sleeping.
The unit has been great. It's actually quiter than the oscillating fan we have in there. I read complaints about compressor noise, and I haven't noticed this. I'm a light sleeper, so I was worried about strange sounds waking me. I did think the fan could be a bit more powerful, but I... more info

I purchased this air conditioner last year. It's very quiet and easy to move on wood floors. I really like the dehumidification mode. The one "con" is that you must use the remote, but is not a problem for me, so I give it 5 stars.
